Tommy
The other night I witnessed one of the most beautiful moments I have ever seen in my life.
I went to my brother Tommy's football game. He is the starting running back for his freshman team. He is good, really good, and I'm not just saying that because he is my brother and I think he totally rocks.
The coaches in the past had not let him play much, or enough for him to work his magic, but this changed the moment they let him on the field that night. As he scored the first touch down of the game, he seemed to never stop. Every time the ball reached his hands beauty was emitted from him. The coaches at one point even threw him in as linebacker for a kid who was having an "off night."
Tommy had an exciting and, I'm sure, encouraging night-- but I have to say there is nothing more beautiful than when that kid came off the field with his friends, siblings, cousins, and parents waiting for him. His smile had never been so brilliant and his eyes had never beamed the way they did right then. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I just stared at him in his glorious moment--I could tasted it just by looking at him. When he caught me captivated by his joy-- to avoid pulling him out of his earthly heaven, I came up with the genius question, "did it hurt when he tackled you?"-- Yes, I am well versed in the language of football. A cute little cheerleader girl even came up to him with her friend and said, "Tommy, my friend wants to meet you,"... yeah, I think the kid had a good night.
Later, I over heard him say to my dad, with joy spilling onto every word, "See, I said all they had to do was give me a chance..." I love him for that. I love him for believing in himself and not giving up when it seemed too hard.
Seeing him in that captivating state can only inspire one to thank God for a perfect moment like that. It may seem strange to think that this moment was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, but when you see someone you love shine with joy in a way you have never seen before... amazing.
I hope I never forget it -- that brilliant smile, those beaming eyes, and his pure joy.
